Hopeall Falls

Updated: Aug 29, 2020

Hopeall Falls is a beautiful waterfall off of highway 80, just further than an hour outside of St, John's. It's a great spot to spend a hot summer day.

Directions

It is easily accesible via a gravel road, the benefit of this is that you can park in the area linked below. It is only a couple hundred metres away from the falls, the drawback is that the road is pretty rough so you have to be careful with your car.

Another option is parking along the highway, there is a parking lot with a large Hopeall Falls sign which is hard to miss from the highway, this is linked below. This walk is a bit longer (15-20 minutes) and allows you to avoid beating up your car.

The Falls

Finding the falls is pretty straight forward as long as you follow the signage and the paths. The falls are also marked on google maps. If you walk in from the gravel road you will end up in a spot which over looks the falls.

If you continue down the path you will go down a steep hill, which at the bottom has the river which flows from the falls. I would reccomend leaving your stuff either here or at the top of the hill overlooking the falls. This bottom area is also the best spot to swim as you don't have to deal with such strong currents like at the bottom of the falls.

There are two ways down to the falls, the first is a small and very steep path from the spot which overlooks the falls. I included the picture below which if you look to the right of Ericas arm you can see the path. I would reccomend extreme caution as it is not maintained, but it is the quickest way down to the falls.

The other option for getting down to the falls is to swim upstream from the bottom of the hill I earlier mentioned is a good spot to leave your stuff, as well is the best spot to swim. This is what we did initially before I realized there was the steep trail. There are some hidden rocks underneath the water so be careful not to bang yourself up too much. We wore our running shoes so we wouldn't have to worry about where we were stepping (you can put them in the washer and then the dryer afterwards with no problem). The picture below is taken from the spot that you can swim to the falls from.

As you can see below it is possible to stand directly under the falls. I would again reccomend wearing runners or water shoes for this and being very careful of slipping. Caution is defintely key here as the scattered rocks lead to some awkward steps.

P.S. I feel like I should mention that there isn't a great spot to lay out in the sun near the water. However there are some abandoned campsites which you'll walk by on your way in.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask. If you go check it out let me know what you think! Thanks.
